CARBOGEN AMCIS Apprenticeship Diaries - Eveline

What is an apprenticeship like at CARBOGEN AMCIS?
Looking from the outside in, it's hard to picture what exactly it is like to work for a company and what to expect if you were to undertake an apprenticeship. In his own words, Eveline shares his experience as an apprentice at CARBOGEN AMCIS and offers his top five pieces of advice for future apprentices.

Name: Eveline
University: BBerufsschule Aarau
Period of Internship: August 2015 – August 2018
Function: Chemical Lab Technician

It was a very diverse experience through and through. I was given the opportunity to work on many projects which allowed me insights into a great variety of different areas.

What was your most memorable part of your experience and the biggest challenge you encountered?

The most memorable part of my apprenticeship was the great time I had with my fellow apprentices. Another enjoyable moment was our LIMS Online Training Competition which we hold in our lab: the person who scored least points had to bring a cake for the whole team. Last but not least, I find some of the syntheses I worked on together with Franz (my instructor) quite remarkable and will keep them in good memory as part of my apprenticeship! The biggest challenge was the final exam. It is important to stay focused and determined – then it will definitely be possible to master this exam and reach good grades.

What was the interview process like and what qualities helped you score the apprenticeship?

In my opinion it is most important that you really do have a strong interest in chemistry. You should be able to work
independently and understand the need of working very accurate and clean. These are the core characteristics that
make a good lab technician.

How did you hear about the apprenticeship?

I saw the advertisement on a website where you can search for apprenticeships.
